How Many Days Off Do You Need To Move House? Moving Home In Rugby

Booking time off work when moving house in Rugby is always a good idea. But how many days off do you need to move house?

Typically, home movers take between two and five days annual leave. But the number of days you need will depend on how your completion day falls!

At Horts, we are moving people into their new homes daily! We have some great insights and tips for you when arranging time off for your house move. Read on to learn more.

First up, the million-dollar question:

Is One Day Off Work Enough To Move House?

Booking the day of your move off work is a sensible decision! For some people, that will be enough, particularly if you’re moving to a property within the local area. If you schedule your completion day for a Friday and usually get the weekend off, you will have three days to settle in before you return to work.

If you’re using a removal company’s pack and unpack service, you will probably find that this is ample time to get everything done. On the other hand, if you’re moving a distance away, or managing all the packing, loading, and unpacking yourself, a single day will not be enough to get everything ship-shape!

Will I Need To Take A Whole Week Off?

Don’t worry – your annual leave is safe! You’ll unlikely need to take as long as a week off work to move house - unless you want to give yourself time to settle at a more leisurely pace! A full week off may be a good option if there is work to complete on your new property to make it comfortable. Some home movers find that taking several days of annual leave to manage their move helps to relieve the stress and pressure involved in the process. A full week gives some breathing space to decide where everything should go as it’s unpacked and to get fully settled in.

Does My Employer Have To Legally Give Me Time Off To Move House?

There are no legal requirements in the UK for employers to give their employees time off to move house. Nevertheless, some employers do offer discretionary days that you can use for a one-off situation like a house move. It is in the best interest of employers to provide flexibility to employees by allowing them to take time off during the home-moving process. However, it is at their discretion.

What Happens If My Moving Date Changes And I've Already Booked Paid Leave?

A problem that homebuyers may face is an unexpected delay relating to their moving dates after they’ve already booked paid leave. If this happens to you, keep your employer updated to ensure a solution can be reached.

Booking a full week off once you know your moving dates could be a solution since delays will typically only be a day or so, and having an entire week free will give you some wiggle room.

What Is The Best Day To Move House?

Generally, Friday is the best day to move house as you'll only need to take two days of annual leave, giving yourself four full days to move home.
